Ogwashi-Uku Association USA Inc. (DC Chapter)

president

Sometime in 1990, a group of Ogwashi-Uku sons and daughters and their families in the Washington DC area, led by Mr. Francis Ndika, came together to form what was then known as the Ogwashi-Uku Progressive Union.  A formal launching of the group took place in 1997, under the leadership of Mr. Francis Ilechie. Then in the year 2000, a formal inauguration of the Ogwashi-Uku Family Reunion under the leadership of Mr. Elias Uwandi, led to what is now the Ogwashi-Uku (National Association), and took place in Washington DC. We have from the onset, endeavored to promote the cultural identity and welfare of our people here, and at the same time, carry out some major capital projects at home. These have gone a long way to help with enhancing the quality of life of our people at home, particularly the youth.. .

Most notable is the donation and installation of 25 computers to St. Rose’s and the remodeling of the school library to accommodate the computers. We also built a full size structure to house the giant generator that is capable of supplying electricity to the entire campus. We also helped to negotiate with the Education Ministry and the Post Primary Education Board for the construction of a solid fence around the entire campus, and positioning of security staff to man the posts in the school. These efforts were publicly acknowledged by the Delta State Government on August 1st, 2006 at and official ceremony at Asaba that was attended by the schoold's PTA, major stakeholders (Chief & Mrs. P.O.C. Ozieh and Chief Young Okafor) and my humble self (Dr. Mabel Enwemnwa). We are proud of what we’ve been able to achieve, though this has been a pilot project. We would like to do more, if we have the means.

It is important to note that we would not have achieved any of these at home without the relentless efforts and help rendered by Chief and Dr (Mrs.) P.O.C. Ozieh; Chief and Mrs. Young Okafor and Dr. Ike Enwemnwa, who are on site to supervise and advise. We salute these sons and daughters of Adaigboland. We also salute those members from here who have taken time out of their tight and short traveling schedules at Ogwashi to visit the school project site. These include Prof. Matt Mogekwu; Mrs. Gladys Mogekwu; Mrs. Loretta Dungor; Mr. Elias Uwandi and Mrs. Nneka Uwandi and my humble self. Our thanks also go to the current principal (Mrs. C. Mordi), and the PTA of the school who have continued to supervise the work.

We in the Washington D.C. Chapter in collaboration with the National Unit would love to do more with your help and support. We welcome you all to this convention of 2007. May the Almighty God see you safely back to your various destinations.

We meet every 2nd Sunday of the month, all year round. We use this opportunity to encourage all Ogwashians in Maryland and DC Area to come and be a part of our noble cause. You would be glad you did. You are encouraged to give back to your community

Thanks and God bless!
Dr. Mabel Enwemnwa (Chapter President)
